Meet the AC3 Project

We know you are all aware of the fact that DHP is a noble and honest group. Our charitable contributions are legendary. Unicorns and pixies sing our praises in fields of flowers and throwout bearings.

OK that may be layin it on a little thick. We apologize for that, but we don’t apologize for the cool kids at Cienega Highschool in Vail Arizona. AC3 stands for Air-Cooled Cat Club…I think. DHPs own Mick Keck is teaching a car build class there and yep you guessed it…it’s a 65 VW. Mike asked a few of us to come down to get a look at what the class had goin on.

We were impressed immediately when we got there. We all wished we had a shop type teacher like Mike.

On this particular day the tasks included working on the narrowed beam DHP Brandon donated to the project.

Student Brodie and dad Bo were working on the beam.

This is a picture of Ed (left) and Terry contemplating how they can get their hands on another donut.

Michael was working on the motor.

The body on this car is very clean…very nice.

The class of 30+ students is divided into groups. They have groups for engine, body, suspension, brakes and tires and interior. The groups are responsible for researching options for their particular areas then presenting options to the entire class. Options are voted on and that is how they decide what they’re going to do to the car.

Just like every VW person…Mike’s got toys to remind him.

This is the donor car…aka…Frankenbug. lol

I’m not sure what they were doing but it looks like it smells bad.

Chirco was open and we ran up there and got some urethane bushings for the beam.

Mike kept mentioning some kind of fraternity initiation, but I didn’t get it.

We only stayed a little while but we will definitely be back. We should have a “wish list” from the class soon at which point we will try to help them get all the stuff they need to make this a really nice car. It’s our understanding that the car will be sold to benefit the school at the end of the year.

More on this project soon.
